The „Modfather“ is back! Paul Weller ist zweifellos einer der profiliertesten und pophistorisch bedeutendsten Figuren der britischen Musikszene.
Der 1958 in Surrey als John William Weller geborene Sänger, Komponist und Gitarrist hat bereits mehrere in sich geschlossene Kreativ-Phasen durchlaufen. Von 1976 bis 1982 war er der Kopf von The Jam, der Band rund um die britische Mod-Kultur, die eine neue Eleganz in die Rockmusik brachte. Hier wurde die Attitüde des Punk vermählt mit der dunklen Schönheit des New Wave – The Jam gelten damit als Wegbereiter für Genres, die sich bis heute weiter ausformulieren.
Anschließend gründete er mit dem Jazz-Pianisten Mick Talbot die Band The Style Council, die zwischen 1983 und 1989 die wohl edelste aller Pop-Darstellungen umsetzte und ihre extrem eleganten Songs stets mit einer Prise Jazz würzten. Ihr finales Album mit dem programmatischen Titel „Confessions of a Pop Group“ gilt zugleich als Höhepunkt und Fanal für die besondere Pop-Ästhetik der 80er-Jahre.
