PRESENTED BY ALASTAIR BURNS

The Stetson Family are an acoustic five-piece band who respectfully tip their hats to bluegrass and folk Americana whilst free-wheeling with their own unique sound. They’re said to be “more Old Crow and Gillian than Del, Jimmy or Bill.”

With their third album, True North, due for release in July 2015, The Stetson Family look to add to the international recognition they received in 2013 when their compilation album, O Winding River, hit mainstream charts in the U.S.A, spending time in the #1 spot on the Top 50 Bluegrass/Folk albums, Global Radio Indicator Chart, Alternate Roots Chart (#11) & Roots Music Report Chart (#43) amongst others. Lead singer/ songwriter, Nadine Budge, was also invited and performed in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Songwriter Showcase for the International Bluegrass Music Association Festival in 2012.

The band’s original, story-driven songs are infused with lush harmonies and their live performances take the audience on a toe-tappin’, thigh-slappin’ journey down life’s often joyous and sometimes crooked highway. They are regulars on the Melbourne music scene, the national festival circuit and everything in between, and their festival harmony workshops are inspiring and often culminate with participants joining them onstage.

Long-time friends Nad Budge, John Bartholomeusz and Colin Swan started playing music together in a synth-pop band during the mid 80s, supporting the likes of The Eurythmics, The Monkees and John Farnham. They eventually swapped their synths (and mullets) for proper instruments and, in 2008, teamed up with John’s childhood buddy from the valley, Andy Carswell (My Friend the Chocolate Cake), and Luke Richardson, the guy who worked in the hardware store across the road from Nad. So began The Stetson Family!

The band has gathered a strong following and received great reviews for their first two albums, Hey Sister Mary, Where’d You Get That Gun(2009) and The Devil in His Sunday Best (2011), which Rhythms Magazine described as “a landmark Australian roots album”. They were nominated in two categories (Best Group and Best Bluegrass Song) at the Victorian and National Country Music Awards, and they’ve had songs included on ABC Felicity Urquhart‘s Favourites of 2012 album and in the SBS TV documentary, Last Chance Saloon.

“Every now and then, if you’re patient, you discover a real treasure trove of wonderful music. That’s exactly what happened to me when I first played the ‘O Winding River’ album. Superb harmonies, outstanding musicians and top quality production makes this album a must for all lovers of contemporary bluegrass and country music. Thank you to The Stetson Family for giving me something exceptional to play on my programmes on BBC Radio in England.” Joe Fish, BBC Radio UK

Australian Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association
About Australian Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association

The Australasian Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association was founded in Harrietville on 27 April 2013, at the site where, for more than 20 years, musicians have gathered to play and share music at the foot of Mount Hotham in the Victorian Alps. ABOTMA has commenced building affiliations with bluegrass & old time music organisations, teachers, and performers within the region and internationally, and in particular with the USA where these music forms originated. Over time, an Australasian ‘flavour’ will no doubt develop as the music evolves through local influences. The broad mission of ABOTMA Inc. is to support the teaching, performance, and promotion of bluegrass & old time music.
